Cellar Window Casement

Built and Installed a Cellar Window Today

Ours is an old house, and as a result there are always projects to do. By virtue of spending time in the cellar below our kitchen, relocating circuits for that room’s reno, I realized a rotten window sill had to move up the priority list.

Cleared old rotten wood away and chiseled mortar to get to brick.

Pulled a few side bricks that were barely hanging on.

Here’s the wood that came out.

The longest piece will be reinstalled, with an entirely ‘new’ frame to be constructed below it. The opening is large enough that more window frame can fill the space vs. mortar. One pressure treated 2×8, 8′ was all I needed.

Got it in, nice and snug!

Time to mix it up!

Looks pretty good!

Before too long, I’ll have to plan a day to parge that whole upper wall inside.

Done in less than a full day, I’m happy with quick progress and completion.

Treated wood has dried to the point that painting makes sense. Also cleaned glass and glazed them before paint. Done, done.

That’s all, thanks for looking!
